Historian Ashot Melkonyan: “The idea of unity of the Armenian nation must not be buried in oblivion”
May 28, 1918 is estimated significant for the Armenian nation as the day whenthe First Republic of Armenia was declared. On this occasionAshot Melkonyan, a Corresponding Member of RA NAS, the Director of the History Institute of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of Armenia, touched upon the problem of unity of the Armenian nation at the meeting with journalists.
“We have made a bookish truth the fact that centuries after losing statehood in 1045 in Motherland and in 1375 in Cilicia, we finally restored our independent statehood. The question is that although we lost the full statehood with all its features, some functions of a state remained among the Armenians,” the speaker mentioned, and called the historians to focus their attention on the circumstance that statehood among the Armenians had not vanished completely, but had different manifestations after 1045, and till 1918.
