Import of right-hand drive vehicles to be banned from April 1

And acting owners may freely exploit vehicles imported before that deadline

The import of right-hand drive vehicles to Armenia will be banned from April 1, 2018. The government made that decision at the regular Cabinet meeting, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Vache Gabrielyan.
Vahan Martirosyan, the Minister of Transport, Communication and Information Technologies of the Republic of Armenia, is convinced that this is a right decision, as Armenia uses officially right-hand traffic on its roads. And in this regard, the traffic rules in our country are defined in accordance with the left-hand drive vehicle traffic. Consequently, technical means, road signs, lines, and traffic lights are installed taking into account the circumstance that they are visible and perceptible for the drivers of left-hand drive vehicles.
"Therefore, the operation of right-hand drive vehicles is a danger for traffic as the driver of the vehicle has limited visibility in the case of right-hand traffic. Particularly, when starting from a bus stop or a parking lot, rearrangement of the traffic lane, changing the traffic direction, overtaking and so on," the Minister explained to the journalists after the Cabinet meeting.
The Minister is also convinced that right-hand drive vehicles contain risks of road accidents.
By the way, in case of misunderstanding, Vahan Martirosyan clarified at the Cabinet meeting that the restrictions scheduled to run after April 1, will not apply to those right-hand drive vehicles which are imported before April 1, 2018.
